once upon a time, when barbie was invented her designer ruth handler created her as an alternative to the babydoll which offered the classical rolemodels only. allthough back then her measurements were already doubtable, as a woman who performed different professions she was pretty sovereign for the fifties.
somehow she seems to have lost her political ideals. today she is rather the embodiment of genderbinarity and shallowness. together with her bloke ken they are cementing the wellknown roleclichees and are celebrating the bodynorms they suggest are so important.
for half a century they are both young, slim and the best advertising characters for an infantile beauty craze.
in his current projekt the artist william iralla takes care for the dolls. soon after some psychoanalyticall singlesessions the patients got better. with assistance of cosmetical surgery he helped barbie to find back to her self.

Damals,
bei Barbies Entstehung war sie von ihrer Erfinderin Ruth Handler eher als Alternative zur rollenunkritischen Babypuppe gedacht gewesen. Und auch wenn ihre Maße schon damals zweifelhaft waren, übte sie verschiedene Berufe aus und behauptete sich als Frau der
fünfziger Jahre sehr souverän.
Irgendwie scheint sie ihre politischen Ideale verloren zu haben. Heutzutage ist sie eher der Inbegriff von Geschlechterbinarität und Oberflächlichkeit. Gemeinsam mit ihrem Macker Ken zementiert sie altbekannte Rollenklischees und lässt die als so wichtig suggerierten Körperideale hoch leben.
Beide sind seit einem halben Jahrhundert jung, schlank und die besten Werbefiguren für einen frühkindlichen Schönheitswahn.
In seinem aktuellen Projekt hat sich der Künstler William Iralla der Püppchen angenommen. Bereits nach einigen psychoanalytischen Einzelsitzungen war den Patient_innen geholfen. Mit Hilfe von schönheitskosmetischen Komponenten gelang es ihm Barbie zurück zu sich selbst zu verhelfen.
